The Object of my Affection
Join Collective Conversations is the result
of a JOIN Collective Clothes workshop with the students of MA Fashion Strategy
generation 29 of the ArtEZ University of the Arts: Charlotte Verdegaal, Eliza Lachkova, Julia Berg, Lindy Boerman, Lu Lin, Sophia Buter, Tanya Lauwanichpat. JOIN Collective
Conversations is a magazine developed under the guidance of Anouk Beckers, Chet
Bugter, Femke de Vries and Hanka van der Voet. It shows the research of the
participants in which they focused on themes related to JOIN: the agency of the
wearer and the maker in fashion, ownership, authenticity and value (creation).
During the workshop, texts were read and written, garment pieces were made,
combined, worn and documented, questions were asked, some answers were found,
and ideas on a radically different fashion system were explored and shared.
JOIN Collective Clothes is a modular clothing system that invites people to create clothes together. An open source manual explains how to make four different shapes that together create a complete outfit. Everyone is invited to design and make a piece of a garment. You can JOIN from any place in the world by downloading the manual or by joining one of the workshops. Together, the pieces made by various makers form an ever-growing collective collection.
In this contribution, I investigate the relationship between the maker, garment and wearer. As the maker and wearer, I have a passion for this garment, but do other users love and value it as much as I do? By creating visuals and an associated love letter, I critically question and reflect on the current relationship a lot of wearers have with their garments.
